Safe & Sound
Hey All,
We have arrived safe and sound in Augusta. Actually we arrived 6 days ago, so we’ve been safe and sound in GA for almost a week. We’re still getting settled in (aka – Hilary is hard at work putting our life in order and I am hard at work trying to get her to take multiple breaks for movies and general Augusta exploration).
I’ll post pictures of the house soon, for those of you who are interested. As a teaser – it’s a cottage, and it’s pale yellow.
Also, not this week but probably next, I’ll start posting “mid-weeks” for your reading pleasure… unsure of what a mid-week is? click here.
The Move is Tomorrow
it’s finally upon us. a few boxes left to pack. an apartment to “deep” clean (not sure exactly what a “deep” clean is, but i have a feeling i will become very well acquainted with its nuances over the next 24 hours). our truck will more than likely be large and yellow, and i’m looking forward to the man-sized puzzle of packing boxes, sofas, chairs, tables, a washer & dryer, and various odds and ends into the back of our penske. luckily i love a good challenge (and the longer i spend packing those boxes in the truck the less time i am on “deep cleaning detail).
we’ve enjoyed our last few days in Charlotte – dinner @ The Oceanaire & an evening @ the Dean & Deluca Wine Bar. but it’s time to get going, Augusta is calling and we’re ready. so keep us in your prayers and check back for updates! (we’ll be without internet access for a week or so – thus if you don’t find any updates for a few days don’t worry, we haven’t been taken as political prisoners, nor are we in the witness protection program… just disconnected and surrounded by boxes)
a new moving “experience”
as hilary and i have been packing (and “no”, we’re not done yet) it has shocked me how much stuff we have accumulated. plus it has shocked me at how different this move is for me as opposed to previous moves. we’ve been married just under 2 years now, and this is our first married couple move (though i did drive the truck with all of her stuff from Denver, CO to Charlotte, NC a month before our wedding – but that doesn’t count, since all i did was drive).
in previous years, i’ve moved from home to college, from first college apartment, to college house, to another college apartment, to a shared house in charlotte, to an apartment shared with my lovely wife. these have all been solo-guy-moves. by this i mean that when it came to moving my personal belongings, i didn’t rent any trucks, i didn’t “buy” any boxes, i didn’t wrap anything in paper, and i didn’t begin the packing process until hours before the move. this is in sharp contrast to my current moving experience. here is an incomplete list of reasons why solo-guy technique no longer works:
- not everything was purchased from yard-sales and goodwill
- quite a few things are valued above the DVD collection
- there is now more than one of the following – set of sheets; towels; pair of shoes; lamps; pots/pans; etc.
- china, crystal, flatware, chargers (aka – a plate to put your plate on)
- a washer & dryer
the combination of these (and other) factors have brought me to the conclusion that throwing trash bags full of stuff into the back of a car and throwing a tarp over an open trailer full of belongings is a moving approach of the past. so i will gladly continue on tomorrow in what is without a doubt my new norm in packing/moving - grown-up/adult moving technique (where you value the stuff that you have and you act like it).
Packing Up
so I’m headed off to find some boxes, and once i find them i plan on using the above instructions. here is my problem - hilary wants me to purge alot of the stuff i don’t use anymore. but honestly, i can see myself “needing/using” pretty much everything i have. for instance: i have hand written flash cards for hebrew verb endings from a class i took last year. sure, i don’t use them everyday, but what if “for fun” i want to relearn the nuances of the hebrew language while i drive? exactly, i’d need those flashcards. you can see my dilemma.
life is full of hard decisions, and i can see that packing boxes will be full of its share.
